HSW Design Proposal Development: Outdoor Edition

PATH
After a quite long thoughts, I feel that I have to change the Pathway into something that more simple and fluid. So I've decided to implement a simple long curve and the exhibits are correlated with the curve.

FACILITY MAP/SITE PLAN

The idea of the Outdoor Space is to combine 2 different zones which is Garden (Various Trees) & Rainforest. Various Trees area act as Garden where you can see different kinds of trees. Rainforest act the same way, but it is more to the environmental concern as the site has been flooded in 2011. So, hopefully the Rainforest can reduce the environmental impact and make the site growing and used.

The other new elements that have been added into the Outdoor Facility are the Observation Decks to explore the view around River/CBD/Kangaroo Point/Story Bridge and Rainforest Lake. There will be animals such as Birds and Insects acts as Live Animals Exhibition.

'DRAFT' PERSPECTIVE IMAGES (TEASER)
Here are the 'draft' Perspective Images to gives the idea of the whole facility at the moment. I know probably it is not the final product yet but at least it shows the implementation of the concept and hopefully other related aspects for the project.

The edge of Rainforest, shows the small lake.

FLOW MAP

Here's the Flow Map of the Facility, especially for the inside area. It shows that the Indoor Presentation Space should be through before go to the both Exhibition Spaces. The corridor itself act as a main circulation for the whole footprint area, and I believe it is actually a bit full on the corridor (especially when exhibition time goes).

The solution:
1. Move the Water & Marine Exhibition Door to farther left so it wont disturb the occupants who wants to go to Trees Exhibition directly, or
2. Make another particular corridor that leads to certain point, the consequence is there will be more footprint produced.

ELEMENTS OF THE FACILITY

The Isometric-Plan View shows the elements (or components) for each one of the designed spaces momentarily for Footprint Spaces.

1. Indoor Presentation Space: The concept will be like class/movie theater. Where each story will be filled by 25 students and they will be watching cartoon explained about earth and how important it is as a basic knowledge before go to the exhibition spaces.

2. Water & Marine: A mixture between diorama & digital exhibition. 2 touchscreen LCDs which has informations related to the Water & Marine Life. 6 Diorama exhibits with the kinds of Fish and Planktons, and a Aquarium in the middle shows the Live Animal (Fish).

3. Trees & Earth: Same mixture between Digital & Live exhibition. In this space, there will be plants planted inside the space (show the ground from timber floor). Grass flowers and small maple trees. There is also a Interactive 'back-to-back' LCD (people can access it from both sides) and it has information related to the exhibition.

4. Play Space: The idea of the Play Space is a 'Harvest Moon' which the role playing game as farmer and they required to plant and grow seeds. This open space consists of a hundreds of 40cm x 40cm pots where they can grow their seeds.

MISC
5. Lunch Area: The concept of lunch area is BYOL (Bring Your Own Lunch) as I want to reduce the amount of waste & bin around the facility. There will be 2 lunch areas consists of movable table sets which will be easier if the lunch area will be used for another activities.

ELEVATIONS/LOOK

To make a various materiality usage, I try to put a steel facade on the Presentation Space as it blocks the view completely to outside (only for the 2nd story - before it was completely open) as well as part of learning journey which is curiosity. Other thing is to make it more identical between spaces, the VERTICAL SHADES are applied on the Indoor Presentation Spaces as well as to block a small part of the view, which can be symbolically.

HSW Design Proposal Development

ACCESSIBILITY & SEQUENCE
Here's the masterplan for the facility. The idea is to create a sequence of spaces that represents the growth of curiosity and how they will respond and answer to it.

The sequence will be:
1. Accessible both from Road or City Cat. Will directly seen the entry plaza.
2. Entry Plaza to pathway behind the warehouse. Start to generates curiosity
3. Indoor Presentation Space. Begin to have 'conflicts' and eager them to find the answer of their curiosity. Climax of curiosity level.
4. Marine & Water Exhibition Hall. Gaining knowledge and Learning process.
5. Trees & Earth Exhibition. Gaining more knowledge and more Learning process.
6. Outdoor Exhibition. Further learning process and start to get the pieces of answer about nature. They will feel involved directly with the nature itself.
7. Historical Play Space. Experience: A small contribution for applying the essence of preserving nature, with the background of historical aspect as example.
8. The Exit Route: Exit route is a continuation from Play Space and will direct to the first path.

Misc.
9. Lunch Area. A place to have a break while socializing with others.

 HOW THE BUILDING WORKS

Basically, the idea of the space is simple. I'm using the combination between the concept of Classroom (for Indoor Presentation Space) and Diorama Exhibits (For Indoor Exhibition Halls). Those spaces are familiar for people especially children.

For me, the concern is more to the educative content and the facade itself as a supporter. The idea is to make facade that connecting outside atmosphere to inside. While experiencing outdoor atmosphere, that's the moment of conflicts between curiosity and the eager to answer and apply the knowledge.

The implementation is using quite lots of opening. For Indoor Presentation, I'm using the glass facade windows to give the occupants idea of the outdoor atmosphere. JUST to give the small idea, not exposing the whole of it as it still on the first stage of learning. Then, for both Indoor Exhibition Hall. I will expose more nature (but intentionally still not all of them) to give the bigger idea of nature as part of learning journey. Things such a wind breeze, sound of water and direct view to the sky can be felt from inside of this space. I also put the sequence of bigger ceiling level as it will give more view when the occupants approaching the end. This idea represents the bigger level of curiosity.

Special thing for Trees & Earth Exhibition Hall. I am experimenting with the changing floor surface which from artificial (in this case will be manufactured timber) to natural (raw grass). This space will continue to Outdoor Exhibition Space (which exhibit the more or less same content, but live and real) so later on the further learning process will take place in a complete exposure of nature and the changing floor surface are the representation of transition (or connection) to that bigger context.

MATERIALITY
Most of the facade material for this facility is Timber (besides Glass). Why?

1. Easy to install & maintain.
2. Gives more essence of natural environment.
3. Less impact to the environment (sustainability aspect).
4. Calm & Peaceful.

WALKING WITH NATURE part 2

Below is my narrative which describes the full experience of my Designed Facility, from the eyes of a child named James.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My name is James. I am 7 years old. Today, I will do excursion with my friends from my school. We will visiting new building near Story Bridge. My teacher said, this will be a valuable experience.
We go there by bus. From distance I can see trees and plants all over the land and also the supercool look of the building! After I arrive. I see a circle fountain with bamboo trees on it. I feel calm and welcomed! I try to touch the bamboo and it’s kind of rough. But I love it. I heard the sound of the fountain too and it is calming me down. Oh yeah, other people are coming too. Some of them are using ferry, and they seem like the bamboo trees and fountain as well.
After the bamboos, I walk through the small path. I see trees and grass along the path and I feel like I am in the garden. I feel the air and wind. I see birds fly over. So different experience rather than accompany my mommy shopping to the City. Why all this trees and grass are not just located in the City? So I can feel this everyday in my life, when I go to school or accompany my mommy to grocery? :(
Then I go into the first building, which has 2 floors. I can see outside from here because it has lots of glass. I can see the sky and light. We don’t even need to turn the lights on! I feel curious about all this things around! Inside the building, my friends and me are watching funny cartoon with funny narrator. We laugh and have fun. Oh, the cartoon is actually tells us about the beauty and importance of nature.
After watching the cartoon, I given opportunity to look around. Then I go to the building which facing the river. Here, I can see the sky as well so they don’t need to turn the lights on. I see diorama of fish, seaweed and others. At the end of the room I can see the view of the river and can hear the sound of it. It gives me calm feeling.
I go to other building, which titled ‘Trees and Plants Exhibition Hall’. I go into it and I see diorama of plants and small trees. But I see a very cool thing. If I walk to the end of the building, suddenly the floor is changing into grass! So I walk in the grass inside the building. I feel like I am in the outside. The sunlight is coming inside too!
I follow the grass and now I am in the garden. I see lots of tall trees and beautiful grass. I also see Birds fly over and Insects on the trees. Mainly Dragonfly and Grasshopper. I walk the path and I feel more like in the forest. I feel the wind breeze. I can see the sky and it is very peaceful. I lay in the grass with my friends. Enjoying fresh air.
After a while, out teacher calling us for lunch. I bring my own sandwich but I see some of small food stall probably just in case someone forgot to bring lunch. We have lunch around the cool buildings. We sit on bench. We talk to people from other school. We talk about our experience in the garden back there. Everyone is telling excited stories!
Before we go home, my teacher said that we have to play games first. We directed to a big space, which has lots of bottles and bunch of costumes. Here, we have to play ‘Harvest Moon’. We wear an Overall Jeans, Hat and Boots. We have to plant a seed into the bottle. I take the soil from the ground, put it into the bottle, put the seed and water them. I plant a nut seed. We have to wait for few weeks to actually see the seed grows perfectly. My teacher said that planting seeds is the history of old farmer people, which is rare now. My teacher also said that if we planting seed, we also keep the nature.
After do games, we directed to exit route. We back to the path at the first time. It is hard to say goodbye but I really enjoyed today. Now I understand why this building has lots of trees, grass, birds, insects and even sunlight. They are so beautiful. I wish I can enjoy this everywhere and when I grow up, I want kind of those in my house :)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fin, hope you enjoyed it :)

INDOOR & OUTDOOR EXHIBITION

INDOOR SPACE: TREES AND PLANTS INDOOR EXHIBITION HALL

There are 3 sketches that represent the idea of Connecting Nature. My implementation is to connect indoor to outdoor using a open facade design and roofing. Now I would like to explain idea number 2 about Transition Space as I think it is more interesting to develop.

The idea is to provide Transition Space between Indoor and Outdoor as a transition between different experience. So, if the occupants walk through the space, he/she will experiencing a changing of space which is from Footprint into Natural. This also represents the idea of Connection to Nature and finally generates curiosity and the answer. I'm using the idea of openings around the building both for Facade and Roofing, and I'm experimenting using 2 different floor surface which is Timber (Artificial Flooring) and the Grass from the outdoor itself.

As you can see the surface between indoor and outdoor seems 'naked' without any physical surface as to let the natural ambience go through the space. The roofing also utilized for vegetation lighting.

OPEN SPACE: OUTDOOR EXHIBITION
Outdoor exhibition hall is one of the main thing for the facility. It is actually the extension from Indoor Exhibition Hall which will present the same exhibits but in the more live and interactive way.
The layout for the space is circular which will generates seemly like number '8' circulation layout. This space has some sort of center for self locating. The inner circle (Live Exhibition) will consists of sub-tropical trees and live animals such as Birds and Insects.

This space is a continuation from Indoor Exhibition Space so basically the experience is actually a bigger picture from the essence of this facility.

Detailed Brief for 2 Spaces

1.    Indoor Exhibition Hall 2: Trees and Nature Exhibition
Size: 16m x 10m = 160sqm
Contents
·      Exhibition of trees and natural aspects, presented in digital such as pictures, slides, and photos.
·      A façade/openings that designed to connect the inside to outside – building relationship between architecture & environment.
·      Using a sustainable material and less-impact to the environment.
·      Using simple geometry and form, as to keep simple and easier understanding of architectural aesthetic.

2.    Outdoor Exhibition Space: The Plane of All Senses
Size: 25m x 10m = 250sqm
Contents
·      This space is actually an extension from Indoor Exhibition Hall 2
·      Exhibition of trees and natural aspects, presented live and interactive. To  understand, the occupants have to use all senses that he/she had.
·      The open space consists of pathway between the trees and a sitting area where people can relax while enjoying the exhibition.
·      The supporting features are wind breeze, sky view and the sound of surroundings.
·      Even though the facility is already have lunch area (which utilized for social activities), it is not limited to not use this space for socializing between visitors as reflect to core concept (Social and Natural Connection).

Facade Idea

To accommodate the interactive learning and connect inside the space to the outside world - building direct relationship between architecture and nature. I have few references for the facade idea.

1. House in Las Arenas by Javier Artadi
figure 1
I am actually the fan of 'Square-ish' design architecture. I believe that taking the essence of basic shape can provide simplicity and easier understanding of architecture. Thus, it is easier to programmed as well.

House de Las Aranas by Architect Javier Artadi can be one reference of what I am thinking for this design. The picture (figure 1) shows the excessive usage of openings as a facade. The openings are put in the front elevation and the roofing. The overall design looks pretty simple (square-ish) but the openings make it more interesting.

figure 2
The picture (figure 2) shows the openings that gives a wider view to the surrounding. It makes the space looks more spacious. And, it gives some sort of connection feeling, direct relationship with architecture to the outside world. It seems 'naked' between the interface of inside and outside.

The direct relationship also built by the light that come to the space. As light is the part of natural aspect as well.

2. Hudson Park & Boulevard by MVVA
figure 3
Hudson Park & Boulevard by MVVA is actually an Urban Development Competition Entry. The goal is to develop a Urban Context in this case is a park

(figure 3) I like the idea of the gathering space connected with natural aspects such as trees, grass and some other elements. It seems that the social activities on the space is supported by the natural feeling created by the surrounding.

figure 4
(figure 4) it shows that people do lots of activities and shows the diversity of ages, background, gender and background. It is a space for everyone and where can everyone socialize with others.

HSW Design Proposal: New Massing

For Project 2, the layout of the spaces are separated and connected by pathway. So, it is some sort of individual spaces. From the given result, the idea is not really representing the 'CONTAINER OF CONNECTION' and I might have to produce other alternatives which more representing the idea.

The result from re-think and re-considering between the idea's meaning and the metaphor is an understanding that Container is something that dense and enclosed between each other. Thus, Container is a massive thing that contains lots of things PUT TOGETHER, which from my core concept are Connection to Social, Nature and Sustainability.

Well, it is not supposed to sit as individual space.

2D EXPLANATION
figure 1
A some changes of placement, I made it more enclosed between each other. The pathway and open spaces are taken out first because it can be considered later.

figure 2
My idea is to make the Indoor Exhibition Hall 1 facing the river, Indoor Exhibition Hall 2 facing the parkland and Indoor Presentation Space should get the view of parkland and cliff (as they represents the Nature). Thus, to maintain the dense between spaces I reckon to keep the spaces connected symmetrically.

figure 3
The spaces still connected around the edges. So, to make it more enclosed, I moved the Indoor Presentation Space & Indoor Exhibition Hall 1 a bit closer so now it's connected around the surface.

figure 4
I try to experiment with pushing the Indoor Exhibition Hall 2 so it will intersect with Indoor Presentation Space & Indoor Exhibition Hall 1. To comply with the volume of the space, I moved the volume of the 'lost' space as much as the intersection itself. Special for Indoor Presentation Space, I move the whole 1st Story just to make it a bit different.

figure 5

After that, I put the Open Spaces and Pathway to see if it's fit with the site and facility. The Entry location is still the same as before because I want to create the experience of 'walking with nature' before entering my facility.

3D EXPLANATION
figure 6

figure 7
The Lunch Area will be located around pathway (YELLOW COLOR) as the place for socializing around the facility and the site. This lunch area is also the idea of SOCIAL CONNECTION, where people can gather and form a social community.

figure 8
The Outdoor Exhibition Area is actually an extension from the indoor. So the people are continuing from digital exhibition into real exhibition.

figure 9

I propose that the building should have opening in order to connect the outside world to the inside. My imagination reckon the usage of large opening between the interface of the building and outdoor.

WALKING WITH NATURE

My design is intended to connect the occupants (e.g. Children) to connect with the nature. This can be achieved through all senses. The design is designed with some sort of sequences of experience from start to finish.

At first, children will see the entry plaza, which consists of circular fountain with bamboo tress on it. The sound of water, smell and texture of bamboo can be felt here. I try to stimulates the 'Natural Sensitivity' of the children from the start of my facility, to stimulates their curiosity about nature and to build their thinking about the beauty of nature. After that, the sequence moved to the long pathway before my container of connection which consists of trees, grass, animals, wind breeze and view. This will stimulates their curiosity even more because lots of questions in their head are unanswered yet. Well, just walk through the path and they will find the answer.

In this stage, they have entered the facility exactly at the Indoor Presentation Space. Here, they will be given an understanding about nature and earth. How beauty and important they are. The explanation wont be boring, because this is actually a movie presentation with interesting cartoon characters and funny narrator.

After formal presentation, they will be given opportunity to explore both of the Indoor Exhibition Halls. They will start to find the answer inside those spaces. Either they want to know about Marine Life, or Trees Characteristics. Thus, they also be able to go to the Outdoor Exhibition Space which will involve their learning interactively with the nature. The spaces also designed to connect with the outside world to accommodate the interactive learning.

After a long hours answering their questions, surely they need rest and lunch. The lunch area is provided also for socializing between students and their parents who accompany them to other students and parents. The social connection will be built here to create more friendly situation to complete the rest of the activity. With the natural aspects around the facility, they will have some sort of calm and peaceful experience while socializing with others.

Historical Play Space is to remind them about the History of Brisbane City. The space itself is facing the cliff which a natural historical aspects of Brisbane. The options could be play a role game of History of Brisbane, drawing competition or other activities that seems fun to be done.

After the sequences of activities done, they will be expected to have answered their curiosity about nature and have their mind connected to the understanding of nature. So they are aimed to be a person who can preserve and keep our natural environment in the future.
